Meet Kinder Morgan

Media around the world have been paying a lot of attention to the proposed Keystone XL pipeline, which would run from the Alberta tar sands down to multiple destinations in the United States, and the proposed Enbridge pipeline to Kitimat, BC, which has hit an “unbroken wall of opposition” from more than 130 First Nations that have signed the Save the Fraser Declaration.   Both of these pipelines are officially stalled until at least 2013, and we believe that enough opposition is in place on the ground that neither of those pipelines will ever be built. › Continue reading

Tsleil-Waututh Voice Concerns to Vancouver City Council

Rueben George, Sundance Chief and Member of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, expresses his concerns to the Vancouver City Council about the crude oil tankers now passing through Burrard Inlet at the rate of 2 per week, wtih pipeline expansion plans by Kinder-Morgan to increase that traffic to 288/year. George points out that those waters are traditional Tsleil-Waututh territory, and Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson acknowledges that the Council shares George’s concerns about the effect an oil spill would have on the region, and about questionable decisions being made at the Federal level.

Kinder Morgan – owned by ex-Enron oil billionaires – bought the Westridge terminal in Burnaby, where the tankers are loaded. The company is now applying to Canada’s oil-friendly Harper government to increase the amount of oil from 300,000 barrels per day to 700,000 barrels per day. › Continue reading
